Why I Made This Recipe

I honestly wasn’t planning on making anything new for Valentine’s Day this year. But a recent trip to Costco changed everything – I picked up their pretzel crisps, and before I knew it, I was adding dairy-free chocolate and festive sprinkles. And just like that, these adorable sweet-and-salty treats were born!

This is the kind of recipe I love as a busy mom: minimal ingredients, minimal cleanup, and maximum smiles. My kids couldn’t wait to dip, sprinkle, and nibble on these treats right after school.

Why You Need to Make These Chocolate-Covered Pretzels

Costco lovers, you already know these pretzel crisps are irresistible on their own. But chocolate-dipped and sprinkled for Valentine’s Day? They’re next-level.

With simple, allergy-friendly ingredients, these treats are:

  • Easy to make
  • Fun to decorate
  • Adaptable for any holiday or special occasion
  • Perfect for a quick, sweet and salty snack or gifting

No fancy tools, no complicated steps – just cute, festive, chocolatey goodness.

Why This Recipe Works

This is a no-fail, low-cost recipe that comes together in minutes. Whether you melt the chocolate in the microwave or on a double boiler, you’ll have Valentine’s treats ready before the kids even finish setting the dessert table.

Ingredients and Substitutions

I used my favourite vegan chocolate chips, Costco pretzel crisps, and a mix of Valentine’s-themed sprinkles.

Pretzels, White Chcolate Chips, Chocolate Chips, Pink Sanding Sugar and Valentine's Sprinkles on a white countertop.

Pretzels: Snack Factory Pretzel Crisps work perfectly, but any pretzel will do. Bonus: they’re naturally vegan.

Chocolate Chips: I used Enjoy Life White Chocolate Chips (allergen-free) and Great Value Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips (accidentally vegan). Sub with your favourite allergy-safe chocolate.

Sprinkles: Valentine’s-themed sprinkles and pink sanding sugar. Always check labels for hidden allergens.

Top Tip: If you can’t find sprinkles to fit your theme, mix your own or create your own with royal icing in this handy tutorial video.

Note About Chocolate

A lot of semi-sweet chocolate chips are naturally dairy-free, even if they aren’t labelled “vegan.” Always double-check the ingredients, but this can be a cheaper and easier option than buying specialty vegan chocolate chips. I usually buy mine from Walmart (Great Value brand). I’ve included both options in this recipe so you can pick what works best for you and your family.

How to Make Valentine’s Chocolate Covered Pretzels

Melt the chocolate in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval until smooth.

Pro tip: Start with about ½ cup of chocolate chips as a guide – adjust based on how many pretzels you want to make.

Stirring melted white chocolate with a pink spatula.

Dip each pretzel halfway or fully into the melted chocolate. No rules here – just have fun with this.

Add sprinkles immediately and place on a lined baking sheet to set. Chocolate dries fast!

Repeat until all pretzels are coated.

For a fun twist, drizzle white chocolate on top of the dipped pretzel.

Coloured sanding sugar is so fun – it’s a great way to add some extra sparkle to your handmade treats.

  • Send to school for allergy-friendly classroom treats or pack in lunchboxes as a fun surprise.

Sweet, salty, and instantly adorable, these treats are a hit wherever they go.

Chocolate Pretzel FAQs

Even though this is an easy, straightforward recipe, you may still have some questions. Here are a few common FAQs that should help.

Can I use regular pretzels instead of pretzel crisps?

Yes! Regular pretzels work just as well – just adjust the dipping so the chocolate doesn’t slide off.

Can I make these ahead of time?

Absolutely. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3–4 days, or in the fridge for up to a week.

Can I use dark chocolate instead of semi-sweet or white?

Yes! Dark chocolate or any vegan chocolate works. Feel free to mix and match for a fun colour contrast.

Are these safe for nut-allergic kids?

Yes, as long as you check labels for chocolate chips and sprinkles. This recipe is nut-free and vegan.

I didn’t use all of the chocolate – can I reuse it?

Yes. I recommend melting your chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl so that you can cover it and store it for later use. Simply pop it back in the microwave when you want to remelt it and stir thoroughly before using.
