Ingredients You’ll Need
One of my favourite things about this recipe is how few ingredients it needs. You probably have most of them in your kitchen already!
Here are the ingredients you’ll need to make one chocolate mug cake.

All Purpose Flour: Provides the structure for the cake. You can substitute with a suitable gluten-free flour blend if you need a gluten-free option.
Baking Powder: Helps the cake rise as it cooks in the microwave.
Salt: Balances the sweetness and enhances the chocolate flavour.
Cocoa Powder: Gives the cake its rich chocolate taste. Use unsweetened cocoa powder.
White Sugar: Sweetens the cake and balances the bitterness of the cocoa.
Oil: Replaces butter and helps keep the cake moist. A neutral-flavoured oil works well.
Milk: Brings the dry ingredients together into a thick batter. I use plant-based milk to keep the recipe dairy-free and vegan.
Chocolate Chips: An optional but delicious addition for extra chocolate flavour.
Spray Oil: Used to lightly grease the inside of your mug and help prevent sticking.
How to Make Chocolate Mug Cake
This recipe couldn’t be much easier! You’ll need a microwave-safe mug with a capacity of approximately 350 ml, a spoon and your ingredients.
1. Prepare your mug. Lightly spray the inside of your 350 ml microwave-safe mug with oil. This helps prevent the cake from sticking to the sides.
2. Mix the dry ingredients. Add the flour, baking powder, salt, cocoa powder and white sugar directly to the mug. Stir them together to distribute the ingredients evenly.

3. Add the wet ingredients. Pour in the oil and milk.

Mix thoroughly until you have a smooth, thick batter. Take your time with this step and scrape the bottom and sides of the mug as you mix. It’s important to incorporate all the dry ingredients, as pockets of unmixed flour or cocoa can affect how evenly the cake cooks.

Don’t worry if the batter seems thicker than you expected. That’s perfectly normal for this recipe.

4. Add the chocolate chips. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top of the batter. They’ll add an extra hit of chocolate to your finished cake. You can also experiment with other mix-ins if you’d like to try something different.

5. Microwave the cake. Place the mug in your microwave and cook until the cake has risen and is cooked to your liking. In my 900-watt microwave, this takes approximately 90 seconds. Start checking at around the one-minute mark, particularly if you’re using a more powerful microwave. You’ll notice the cake puffing up as it cooks before settling back down. This is normal, so don’t be alarmed if it rises quite dramatically!

6. Let it cool and enjoy. Carefully remove the mug from the microwave. It will be extremely hot, so leave the cake to cool for a couple of minutes before eating. Your chocolate mug cake should have a thick, soft consistency with a lovely chocolatey centre. Enjoy it straight from the mug or add your favourite toppings for an extra-special treat.

My Tips for the Best Chocolate Mug Cake
Use a suitably sized mug. I recommend a microwave-safe mug with a capacity of around 350 ml. The cake needs room to rise while it cooks, so avoid using a mug that’s too small.
Mix right down to the bottom. This is probably the most important tip! Make sure all the flour and cocoa powder are incorporated into the batter. Any dry pockets left at the bottom can stop the cake from cooking evenly.
Don’t worry about the thick batter. This recipe produces a fairly thick mixture, which is exactly what you want. You don’t need to add extra milk just because it looks thicker than a traditional cake batter.
Adjust the cooking time to your microwave. My 900-watt microwave takes about 90 seconds, but cooking times vary depending on the power of your appliance and the mug you’re using. Start checking at around 60 seconds if your microwave is more powerful.
Keep an eye on the cake as it rises. The batter will puff up considerably during cooking and then settle back down. Leave enough space at the top of your mug to accommodate this.
Allow it to cool before eating. The mug and cake will be very hot straight out of the microwave. A couple of minutes of cooling time makes it much more comfortable to enjoy.

Variations and Topping Ideas
One of the best things about mug cakes is how easy they are to customise. Once you’ve mastered the basic recipe, you can experiment with different flavours and toppings.
- Extra chocolate: Add a drizzle of my dairy-free chocolate ganache for an even richer chocolate treat.
- Berry chocolate cake: For a fruity twist, add a spoonful of my 3-ingredient raspberry compote. The sweet-tart berries complement the rich chocolate beautifully.
- Dried fruit: Stir in a small amount of your favourite dried fruit for extra texture and sweetness.
- Nuts and seeds: Add a sprinkle of chopped nuts or seeds if they’re suitable for your dietary needs.
- Frosted chocolate cake: Allow the cake to cool before adding your favourite dairy-free frosting.
- Sprinkles: Finish with colourful sprinkles for a fun dessert.
- Ice cream: Serve with a small scoop of dairy-free ice cream for a more indulgent treat.
You can keep it simple or dress it up depending on what you have in the kitchen. It’s a great way to make a quick dessert feel a little different every time.
Can I Make This Chocolate Mug Cake Gluten-Free?
Yes, you can try replacing the all-purpose flour with a suitable gluten-free flour blend. As different flour blends absorb liquid differently, the texture may vary, so follow the blend’s guidance where available and check that your other ingredients are suitable for your dietary requirements.
Storage
This chocolate mug cake is best enjoyed freshly made, while it’s still warm and soft. As it’s a single-serving recipe that takes less than 3 minutes to prepare, there’s really no need to make it ahead of time.
For the best texture, mix and cook a fresh mug cake whenever you’re ready for a chocolate treat.

Mug Cake Questions
Yes! The recipe contains no egg or butter. Use plant-based milk and vegan chocolate chips to keep the entire recipe vegan.
In my 900-watt microwave, the cake takes approximately 90 seconds to cook. The whole recipe takes less than 3 minutes from start to finish, including mixing and a short cooling period. Adjust timings based on your microwave’s power.
It’s normal for a microwave mug cake to puff up as it cooks and then settle back down. This is part of the cooking process and doesn’t necessarily mean anything has gone wrong.
You can try using a suitable gluten-free flour blend in place of the all-purpose flour. The texture may differ depending on the blend, so results can vary.
The most common things to check are how thoroughly you’ve mixed the batter, the size of your mug and the cooking time. Make sure you scrape the bottom of the mug when mixing, use a suitably sized microwave-safe mug and adjust the cooking time for your microwave.
